How can words stimulate images?

Want an image on your site? Or a new background for your blog? You can’t find it without words. Don’t believe me? Try searching through istockphoto without any words. Doesn’t work very well does it? Problem is, even with words, sometimes finding the right image isn’t easy. So, the better title for this post really should be “how can the right words stimulate images”. The question that follows would then be, how do you find the right words? You have to narrow down what you are looking for. Check out the example below of how I narrowed down the right words to find the image above from istockphoto:
  • I wanted an image of a girl
    • I also wanted it to be a silhouette
      • And a vector so it could be modified
        • But I wanted her to be young
          • And I wanted her to have a bit of arrogance in the pose
            • In a dress
But, you can’t search for all of that! So, how would I find that image? I could search for “girl and silhouette” but that turns back 5055 results, and I certainly don’t want to look through that many. So what do I add to narrow it down? Well, I know I want a vector, so I can go into the settings of search for istock and check off vector. Or, I can add one extra word into the search. The problem is what word? I want her young, in a dress and with arrogance. What type of woman can you imagine that has that? My first thought – a celebrity, a star! So, I enter “girl and silhouette and star” and presto, 55 results and she shows up number 10. The exact image I want, one search, all taken care of! I will warn that it has taken a lot of time to get to the right words for all my images, but it all starts with a little brainstorming and testing. Go ahead, try it!

Picking the Right Domain Name

* As written on Wright Creativity * The first step in getting your website up and running is picking your domain name. You want to pick the right one that best portrays your business, industry, or relevat to what your website is.

Company Website

You first will want to try seeing if your company's name is available as a domain name. If so, great then you are on the way. If not, you will have to do a little more research. What does your business provide? What is your industry? For example, my company does web design, hosting, maintenance, domain registration, etc. everything a person will need to get a website up and running. Now, luckily my business name was available as a domain name! I currently have registered; www.theeverydaywebexpert.com and www.kylereddoch.com, both of which goes to my company's website. Let's say that my company's name wasn't available. What would I do? Well I would have to look to what my company does. Maybe even the region where my company is located, or town. I would then put all those together and find the right domain. Here are some possible domains that I could use for my industry: Just take some time to search available domains and find the right one that fits your company.

Personal Website / Blog

If you are creating a website for personal use or a blog, you might want to go a different route to decide your domain name. For personal websites or blogs, you can have your name as the domain name. For instance, www.kylereddoch.com is a great one for me :). You can also have a domain name that suits what the purpose of the website or blog is about. You want to make the domain name easy to remember though. You don't ever want a person trying to remember your domain name...because in all reality, they won't. There are thousands of possibilities for domain names out there, you just have to find the RIGHT one! ~ Kyle Reddoch

Preventable Professional Mistakes

Have you ever wanted to disappear after committing some stupid faux pas? If it occurs in a professional context, it could be more than embarrassing - it could cost your business or hurt your career. Here are some common preventable gaffes.
Gaffe: 1. a social or diplomatic blunder, 2. a noticeable mistake
You want visibility in your career. However, that visibility should be a positive one. The last thing you need is a gaffe - that is, doing something (mentioned in the meaning above) that would put you in the negative spotlight. Here are a few areas to beware of.

1. Misspelling someone's name

A person's name is one of the most important possessions - so make sure to spell it right. Nothing indicates a lack a professionalism more than misspelling a person's name. When in doubt, ask. Most people won't find your question annoying. In fact, they'll be honored that you thought spelling their name was important enough to check directly. A misspelling need not involve only a personal name, either. It might be a key term used in your organization, profession, or industry. A company's name is also among these.
